today i took the day off. i crammed a week's worth of clients and paperwork into 2.5 days and spent the rest of the week helping my family prep for a wedding. by the time we got to the wedding i was oh so very tired, and by the time it was over, i'm pretty sure i looked like a zombie! a week of extra-busyness left me completely exhausted.
when i finally got to call it a day i was left with that one final decision of the day - "what time do i set the alarm?" ugh! seriously don't even want to think about that - so i didn't; i simply went to bed. don't get me wrong church is one of my favorite places, well at least my church is one of my favorite places, but the thought of having to get up was beyond the normal "just 5 more minutes..."
i wish i could tell you that i slept till noon - nope i didn't, but close :) i slept till 8 (which was actually only 6 hours of sleep). immediately my mind raced to the long list of to-do's, church, laundry, treatment plans, exercise, phone calls, and emails...all the things that got lost in the craziness of the last 7+ days.....
i sat down to look at some treatment plans, which really do need to be done....yawned and went back to bed. the second time i woke up it was 11:30. once up i decided i wasn't going to do anything on my long list of to-do's. i won't lie, there were several times throughout the day that i felt crazy and worried over all the things i should have been doing...although i did worry about it in my mind, i didn't actually do anything on my list of to-do's! the pile of laundry, the treatment plans, and everything else is still there needing to be done, and somehow it will, just not today.
after some mindless internet surfing i realized i hadn't looked or written on my blog in awhile so i went to check it out. one of the blogs that i follow is one by a lady who i don't actually know, but whose wisdom i love reading about! brene brown's recent post was about play. i was oh so excited to read on her blog that one of the properties of play is having time spent without purpose. i'm all about purposefully living that the very idea of that sounds quite strange, but it was oh so good. my spirit needed time without purpose; it needed time to sit, watch a movie, eat ice cream, do mindless internet searching, and do "whatever" i wanted. never once did i think that what i had done described play in any way, but after reading brene's blog i was pleasantly excited to say that i played today!
play is something i don't usually do well. work, to-do lists, obligations, and regulations i do very well. play not so much. so today, a day that i was forced to do nothing mostly because i was so exhausted turned into a blessing, a play-day!
i make no promises that i will play everyday, but i like the idea of playing everyday. its always one day at a time, but we'll see if i can manage to play without putting it on the to-do list :)
so how will you play today?
